39 East

Theater: Broadhurst
Opening Date: March 31, 1919
Performances: 160

Playwright: Rachel Crothers
Director: Rachel Crothers
Producer: Mary Kirkpatrick

Partial Cast: Luis Albertini, John Kirkpatrick, Gertrude Clemens, Jessie Graham, Victor Sutherland, Alison Skipworth, Henry Hull, Constance Binney.

Tallulah's Role: Penelope Penn

Actually Tallulah only appeared in six performances of 39 East. She was hired as a weekend replacement for Constance Binney (who wanted the time off), but shortly after beginning, an actors strike halted the production.

Talllulah's comments: "Unconsciously I was imitating Constance Binney down to her slightest gesture, the tricks of her voice, her walk. I was parroting her, in no sense giving a performance of my own. I had completely obliterated Tallulah Bankhead, a feat contrary to my intent."
