Devil and the Deep

Picture
with Gary Cooper
Paramount
Released: August 19, 1932

Director: Marion Gering

Partial Cast: Charles Laughton, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Paul Porcasi, Juliette Compton

Tallulah's Role: Pauline Sturm

Many fans and critics consider this to be Tallulah's best film during her Paramount years. She plays the unhappy wife of a extremely jealous submarine captain (played with intensity by Charles Laughton). Gary Cooper and Cary Grant play the men who try to steal her from him.

Much of the film is unintentionally funny, especially Laughton's raging moments with extreme close-ups of his mouth and eyes. It is also quite obvious that the exterior submarine scenes are fake. Tallulah was imaginably photographed and, in some scenes, she looks like Garbo!
