The Lady of the Camellias

Picture

Theater: Garrick
Opening Date: March 5, 1930
Performances: 136

Playwright: Alexandre Dumas
Director/Producer: Nigel Playfair

Partial Cast: Glen Byam Shaw, Harold Warrender, D.A. Clarke-Smith, Richard Goolden, Renee de Vaux

Tallulah's Role: Marguerite Gautier

This classic romance, oddly called "Camille" in most film adaptations (Garbo's 1936 version being the most memorable) enjoyed a respectable run and Tallulah's gallery girls loved it. The critics were lukewarm, however, and it was not one of her best reviewed plays.

Tallulah's Comments: "I was very fetching in hoopskirts and crinoline, but James Agate wrote in the Times that my Marguerite was so chaste as to be downright painful."
